The morning after….

The morning after a night with your loved one and more drinks than you can count is an occasion full of laughter for sure. You don’t know what exactly your laughing about or how you’re laughing because your mind is so preoccupied by picking everything up and surveying the damage.

The night before may be a very different story ya know; there’s a reason you’re surveying the damage, but that’s not the fun part. The fun is just laughing. I know that I will have plenty of these mornings to look forward to; mornings with my one love looking at each other in amazement wondering how we could have possibly, sanely done whatever we did. Broken Wiis, hurt hands, empty wallets and so on. For us, as long as our furry little girl, Halley, is still with us, and able to look us without underlying disgust, we’re o.k. I smile because there will probably be things, that hopefully Halley is not witness to because respect may be an issue after we do whatever we are surely to do.

I imagine places and positions that I or my lady will surely pass out in, with whatever staining our clothes and our mouths. I know already in a fit of drunkenness I have eaten six tacos with stains on at least my stomach to deal with.

Gradually the haze dissipates, you find your way home if you are not already there, and pick up life like setting the needle right after getting caught on a scratched record. The hope is that you have a full day to recover. Work before noon is definitely a bad thing. Advise for one of these nights is reserve them for holidays and special occasions so plenty of planning can happen. Day after is definitely a cause for concern, and worth an extra though or two. Mid week binges that leave memories all but whole may yield different results; results that may serve angry tones and untied endings when off to the office rather than involuntary fits of laughter.

This one has been a good one. My baby is sleeping soundly in the adjacent room and no broken bones. We may have a Wii to replace but there are worse things. As long as you and yours are on speaking terms I’d say you’re o.k., and we are.

Planner/Scheduler: an ADD toolbag’s must have.

     This is the first blog on my progress on dealing with symptoms of ADD. Over the past week I have attempted to keep up with my day-to-day planner. Like any new habit, it has been hit or miss for consistency. One thing I have noticed is, even with sporadic use, I have kept up with my to-do’s more than I had before.

     The planner is an idea that I had given to me in high school; yet, I had never kept up with it for more than two or three days. I have tried a few times since, but much like quitting smoking, it would only last so long before I was back to the way things were. I had recently bought a planner and was doing well with it, but I ironically lost it: like I do so many other things.

     I now have a new one and I am working on incorporating it into my day-to-day life. The trick I find is to form a habit of some kind to eliminate any variances in use; because, Q: What does inconsistency brew? A: The same missed appointments and unfinished tasks that have plagued me, and others I am sure, in the past. My strategy is to check my planner as part of my morning routine. Even if I go to sleep knowing what I have to do tomorrow I will often forget tasks that I have given to myself by the time I wake up. Refreshing myself in the morning takes seconds and eliminates inconsistency.

     Throughout my day I have been checking off what I accomplish. In all honesty, at the end of the day it feels good to see what I have done. This is so much better than before when I would unknowingly focus on what I forgot, or simply did not do.

Here are some tips I have for using a planner.

  • Do not give up when an attempt to maintain a planner is unsuccessful. Chances are you’re not going to keep up with it the first try. Trust me in this: it takes time, but it will be worth it in the end.
  • Work checking your planner into a morning routine; if you don’t have a morning routine, try checking it within five minutes of waking up.
  • A budget was factored into my decision of which planner to buy. Today’s economy makes each dollar count. When looking for the right fit I realized it is hard to find a decent one under $10. I looked for one that was constructed well and had plenty of room in each day’s slot to write multiple items. One with a slot for a pen is handy.      Extra Tip-Go to your local college. Planners are often laid out and free throughout the campus. They do this as a strategy to help students keep up with assignments.
  • Carry it on you at all times. Appointments come along as randomly as anything else in life. This is all about being prepared, it will come in handy. *Write down even the most menial appointments or tasks. These are the easiest to slip your mind. This will also strengthen your habit of recording you to-do’s.
  • Fulfill your duties and check them off when they are completed. You will feel good about getting everything accomplished. Keeping in mind that time does not always permit everything to be completed in one day. There is no shame in moving to-do’s to another day.

The secret to happiness

Obviously I cannot tout that I have the secret to happiness. There isn’t one as far as I can tell. The one good thing that I am good at though is smiling. I was told by a professional, that does this (blogging) for his career, that I was to find five or six topics to write about and go from there. I have worked in the customer service industry for sometime now and know the impact something as small as a smile has on damn near everyone.

From what I can gather from life it really is the little things that matter: the subtle flavors that one can explore in a good meal, the see-you-later hugs from that special someone that can make the rest of the day, and so on and so on. My blog about the little things will a)hopefully keep me in tuned to them myself and b) raise anyone else’s awareness to those who reads what I have to say.

There is no secret to happiness: this is life, you have to take it for what it is. But, there is a way to milk it for all that it is worth. My hope first off is that people will read what I have to say; but secondly, and probably most importantly, that I can help someone discover the little things that may go unnoticed that make even the most mondane of tasks worth doing. I don’t want to make it seem like I am always the most cheerful person in the world, like anyone else life can get me down. But the times that can go one way or the other can easily go to the side that makes everything worth living. I hope you like what I will have to say, and I would like to encourage any feedback.
