Dealing with ADD: a mind that wonders

I am 25 years old and was diagnosed with ADD when as a junior in high school. At the time I was prescribed medication (Adderol) and tutored to help me in my schooling. The medication was prescribed on an as needed basis, which I took before, and during class. The tutoring replaced one class period during my day and was supervised in the ‘Recess’ room by Mrs. Lumley and Mrs. Iacavazzi: two aids who cared and put a lot of effort in for their students. I eventually earned my high school diploma in 2002 thanks to the extra help.

After high school I took a hiatus from my education, and stopped taking the medication, I later enrolled at Des Moines Community College and began taking classes in the spring of 2008. It is now June of ’09 and I am now enrolled for my second full-time year as a student. I did well in my first year, but noticed difficulties with attention, keeping track of appointments and assignments, and memory retention. I am not on any medication currently, but am going to be looking into the option of medication.

I am involved with the Vocational Rehabilitation program of the State of Iowa and will be receiving additional support through their services. I am in the process of setting up the services I will receive through the program and through DMACC that will accommodate me for the upcoming semester. In the fall I will be getting additional tutoring from DMACC and Vocational Rehabilitation.

The purpose of this blog is to help people deal with the effects of ADD in their’s, and in the lives of others. I will be tracking my progress and reporting back on strategies I employ. I am going to live by my planner, and track my successes and failures in doing so. My hope is that this will become a forum with input from not only myself, but others living around ADD.

The ironic thing is the idea of this project sounds very exciting for me. I am looking foreword to keeping up with the blogs, looking up info, and asking questions about everything related; but, am now loosing focus and getting distracted by wanting to play with my cat or anything else that sounds fun, like many of the other projects that I have started before. I am going to make this a goal of mine, and readers will be able to see my progress with it. I plan on writing entries every Friday, this will be the gage of how well I do.

Thanks for reading and I hope this will be helpful.
